Hazel raced through the bushes, her tail tucked tight against her legs. Who was that man who’d just been in the garden? She’d been looking for Avery – and breakfast – and she hadn’t seen him at first. He’d been sitting on a bench outside the house, sitting very still, and she just hadn’t noticed him.

She still remembered the man from her old home when she was back with her mother. He was big and loud and he grabbed at Hazel and her mother and the other puppies, and pushed them around roughly. Hazel had seen him kick her mother once and she remembered her mother’s terrified yelp. He hadn’t hurt Hazel herself, or not much, but she was terrified of him. The man in the garden had scared her and then he’d wanted to catch her – and Hazel didn’t want to be caught. Not by anyone, except maybe Avery. Hazel trusted Avery now. Avery had spent so much time feeding her, and stroking her, and being careful to move gently and speak quietly, and it had worked – she made Hazel feel safe.

The puppy came to the river, nearly plunging into the water in her panic – but then she swerved sideways and began to run along the edge of the water. She needed to get far, far away, and then she was going to hide.

Hazel was tiring now but she kept plodding on by the side of the river as she came up close to the old water mill. She knew this spot, she realized, looking around wearily. This was where Avery had first fed her, where Hazel had licked up all that delicious sweet stuff that Avery had dropped on the path. She remembered how good it had tasted… The puppy hesitated for a moment, wondering where Avery was now – but then there was a sudden burst of noise as a family came along the path from the mill, children racing ahead and their mum calling loudly after them.
